5 Ethics Every Remote Medical Coder Should Live By

Medical coders are no strangers to working from home. (In fact, few of us are anymore.)

That being said, it’s always good to take a step back and see how you’re doing from an ethical standpoint.

Whether you’re a new coder wanting to do things the right way or you’re a veteran who is looking to impress your supervisors, here are five ethics you should consider making a priority:

1. Passion

First, you have to have a passion for this industry. Or helping people, at least. Healthcare positions are extremely important, but they’re not for everyone. The good news is that you can develop this passion by sharing experiences with others, asking for advice and being a certified member of this community. You can also show this passion remotely by maintaining high levels of production and quality with your coding.

2. Knowledge

You can have all the passion in the world, but if you don’t have any medical coding knowledge, it will be difficult to thrive in a home environment. Fortunately, there are lots of medical coding certification and training courses available from Medical Coding Academy. This includes Medical Coding Academy Online, which lets you remotely gain the knowledge you need in just six months!

3. Dedication

Next, the best remote workers are dedicated to their craft. They do above the bare minimums and aim to thrive, not just survive in medical coding. If you want to improve, it helps to have high goals. (Just don’t get discouraged if you don’t meet them!)

4. Helpfulness

You can also show your value while working from home as a medical coder by being helpful. Whether it’s a fellow coder asking for advice on how to look up a certain code, an insurance rep requesting additional documents or a supervisor asking for you opinion on a matter, make it a goal to be one of the most helpful people at your company. You’ll get noticed in no time.

5. Integrity

Last, but definitely not least, a medical coder should have integrity. You could just focus on this one ethic and be in good shape. While integrity is doing the right thing when no one is looking, if you make it part of your character, it will take you places. Especially for remote workers looking to gain an edge, integrity is a great ethic to live by.
